A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
