A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
